Bomb Jumping

Like rocket jumping, but with bombs

Whenever there is a clear path given in a video game, it’s like second nature to try and short cut that path. And it is no different in Ghost of Tsushima Legends.

What started as a small trick with no real implications, slowly grew to be a fundamental part in skipping sections, getting to unintended places, and being able to raid with less than 4 people. The versatility of bomb jumping was quickly adopted by many people and despite it being an older trick, there are still new spots to bomb jump being found.

So what is it?

Bomb Jumping is the act of gaining more distance or height by using a Black Powder Bomb. The Black Powder Bomb is special, because the blast also affects the character that throws it. We use this mechanic to jump to otherwise unreachable places. By getting hit with the bomb, your character starts the fall animation, and if your character is over a void or a high place, the game will try to put you on “walkable-ground” (meaning that your character is able to stand on that piece of ground). And by throwing the bomb at places where you normally can’t get or jump to, the bomb gives us a way to get there.

This of course gave way to a lot of trial and error to find spots where you could use this mechanic. And over the years a lot of spots have been found. New spots are still to be discovered!

Early Concept of trying to figure out how Bomb Jumps work

This picture shows a very early concept when the jumps were found to see how they work. It was first thought that you can only jump from higher to lower places. Also the concept of “walkable-ground” wasn’t formed yet.

Ghost Weapon Canceling

Bomb Jumps were getting popular and as a result a lot of spots where you could Bomb Jump were also found. But soon after another trick was found, a trick which eventually turned out to be the key to being able to solo Chapter 3 of the Tale of Iyo; Ghost Weapon Canceling.

This trick allows you to regain control of your character after the bomb explodes. You give up some momentum en height and in return you can control and thus steer your character. To do this, you use and spam your ghost weapon right before bomb explodes. Effectively this cancels the fall animation. It does take away some momentum, so this needs to be taking into account when using it.

In some jumps it means you gain some speed because your character doesn’t have the long animation of falling and getting up.

Requirements

The requirements for Bomb Jumping are quite simple. In essence you only need a bomb pack with Black Powder Bombs as a perk on it. You can use this on the following classes: Ronin, Assassin and Samurai.

For both Samurai and Assassin, you’ll need to have the bomb pack upgraded to 120 ki with a class unlock as primary perk and black powder bomb as secondary perk. You can find out how to get a bombpack on Samurai and Assassin here.

Blast Radius

Another important thing to know is that in order to make bomb jumping easier, you can put Blast Radius as a stat on your equipment. This makes the radius of the explosion bigger, which means that it’s easier to be affected by the bomb.

In total you can have 50% Blast Radius equipped on your gear:
– 25% on your Bombpack
– 25% on your Sticky Bomb

Some of the jumps in the game require Blast Radius to work properly. Therefor it’s advised to always run with the max radius available. It also makes the jumps a lot easier.

A Bomb Jump Finding build

While the only requirements to bomb jump are a bombpack and enough blast radius, if you want to find more jumps you can use this simple build to look for jumps. Both the Forbidden Medicine Bompack and the Healing Incense Class ability are used to heal up if you don’t make a jump. The smoke bomb is almost a must because of the munitions perk. Alongside the Lucky perk for the possibility to have the cooldown instantly disappear, means you pretty much will have infinite Black Powder Bombs.
Another class that is often used is Assassin because of its versatile ultimate which pairs well with bomb jumps, but if you’re looking for skips, the extra concussion bombs to test where a bomb would land are very handy.

The most common jumps

Though there are a lot of Bomb Jumps possible, only a hand full of jumps are actually often used. Most commonly used, are the jumps in Chapter 3 of the Tale of Iyo to do it solo, and the jumps in the last part of Chapter 2 of the Tale of Iyo in order to skip the last section.

The Jumps evolve

Because Bomb Jumping has been discovered a long time ago, some of the jumps have changed over the years. They changed to make them easier, or more consistent. Consistency is an important part of bomb jumping, because no matter how good or cool a jump is, if you can’t replicate is easily, it won’t be useful.
