What are Eyes of Iyo and where are they found?
The Eyes of Iyo are large red orbs that move around the map. If a Ghost is in one for too long, roots/vines will hold them in place. Being stuck like this for too long will cause them to be downed (regardless of their health), but teammates, enemies and environmental hazards can free players by hitting the roots.
They are found in the Tales of Iyo/Raid Chapters 1 and 2, as well as in Nightmare or Custom Platinum Survival.
Nullifying the Eyes of Iyo
This guide describes a few methods to avoid getting stuck in the Eyes of Iyo that appear in the Tales of Iyo, Trials of Iyo and Nightmare/Custom Platinum Survival. This is a text-based summary of a great video on the matter made by Joey Dominguez, found here: https://youtu.be/NLldC-VLDfs. Do note that the method numbers here don’t line up with his, as his five methods have been condensed into three, with optional steps.
Disclaimer: Eye of Iyo ‘Cancels’ are considered an exploit/glitch in the sense that this is not the intended way to nullify them. In standard gameplay, one would either be freed by another player (if you became stuck) OR navigate in such a way as to avoid the eye (run/roll through it quickly, run around it)
Method One: Ghost Weapons that use Square and Triangle
- Unsheathe your katana – blocking by tapping L1 is the most convenient way (see below for a full list)
- Stand still
- As the Eye of Iyo gets near, make sure one of your Ghost Weapons is on cooldown
- When you are about to be inside the Eye, hold R1 and spam the Ghost Weapon’s button
- When you get stuck the first time, your character will break out with an attack
- During this attack, release R1, then quickly start holding it and spamming again
- Repeat steps 5 and 6 each time you get stuck
This method will make you move with your attack in step 5 – if you want to stay still, you can tap L1 in between steps 4 and 5 to cut your attack short and stop your movement. If you were spamming Triangle, you can also use tap Circle to use the dodge pose to cancel your heavy attack – this doesn’t work with the Square/light attack version
Method Two: Way of the Flame
- Unsheathe your katana – blocking by tapping L1 is the most convenient way (see below for a full list)
- Stand still
- As the Eye of Iyo gets near, make sure Way of the Flame is on cooldown
- When you are about to be inside the Eye, hold R1 and spam Circle
- When you get stuck the first time, your character will break out
- When this happens, release R1, then quickly start holding it and spamming Circle again
- Repeat steps 5 and 6 each time you get stuck
This method keeps you perfectly still
Method Three: Traversing Through an Eye of Iyo with Way of the Flame
- Sprint up to the Eye
- Continue to hold forwards for the rest of the process
- Jump into the Eye and activate Way of the Flame midair to preserve your sprinting momentum
- Once you land in the Eye, do a dash attack with L3 + Square
- Hold R1 and spam Circle
- When you get stuck the first time, your character will break out with a forward dash and a forward roll
- After this roll, release R1, then quickly start holding it and spamming Circle again
- Repeat steps 6 and 7 to move through/with the Eye
This method, as above, allows you to safely move through an Eye, regardless of the Eye’s direction of travel
