Story

What is Story?

Story is a game mode consisting of nine maps and playable with up to two players. Each map has three parts that are progressed through by killing enemies and/or investigating points of interest. There are optional objectives on higher difficulties that can be completed for more rewards. As with other game modes, there are four difficulties: bronze, silver, gold, and nightmare. The story plot continues with the raid chapters.

How do I play Stories?

Stories are accessed from the story menu in legends. The first, Severed Hearts, is unlocked on bronze difficulty by default. The others can be unlocked by playing the previous story. Silver and gold difficulties can be unlocked by playing the same story on an easier mode or the previous story on the same mode. Nightmare difficulty can be accessed from the Challenges menu. The nightmare story changes weekly.

What do I need?

The stories can be completed solo, but some story modifiers (gold difficulty) and some objectives require a second player. You can invite a friend or matchmake with a random person.

Minimum ki levels are as follows:

  • Bronze: 5 ki
  • Silver: 25 ki
  • Gold: 75 ki
  • Nightmare: 90 ki

What are the rewards?

For completing each story, you’ll receive currency in the form of essence, honor, and blessings. You’ll also receive xp for the character you used and four pieces of gear to be used by any character. Completing bonus objectives will provide more rewards.

First Time Player’s Strategy Guide

There are 5 categories to cover that, if practiced, will improve the odds of a successful Story completion. These categories are: Objectives, Mechanics, Bonus Objectives, Resources, & Prioritization. Learning these methods and then building on your own skills will help you prepare for more difficult challenges

1. Objectives

The top left of the screen shows the current objective. Completing one objective will advance you to the next. The objectives may be to kill all or certain enemies but it may surprise you that some enemies do not need to be killed. They can be ignored completely while you finish the objective then pass through the Tori gate.

2. Mechanics

Each story introduces a game mechanic that can create difficulties for you if you do not understand it. In Severed Hearts, two enemies may be tethered, shown on screen by a red connecting line. Killing one but not the other will allow the dead enemy to revive after a certain time period. Only by killing both together will they stay dead. Learning the game mechanics for each story is vital and will greatly ease your journey.

3. Bonus Objectives

Bonus objectives appear in silver difficulty or higher. They consist of opening a chest filled with enemies (Oni Chest), finding a hidden scroll (Gyozen’s Scroll), and completing a challenge in part 3 (Gyozen’s Curse). Completing these will give extra resources. The scroll can be found solo but the other two require a second player.

4. Resources

As you play, look where Ghost Shrines, Explosive Barrels, Bee Hives, Healing Drums are located. Being able to use a Barrel or Bee Hive to harm a few enemies (and gain some resolve) can be very handy in a pinch. Healing and restocking ammo can help you and your teammate stay alive and ready for the next encounter. There is no need to conserve these resources since you cannot return to them once moving to the next chapter.

5. Prioritization

Self > Teammate > Objectives – Prioritize how you choose what to do based on this order. First take care of yourself (healing, restocking), then help your team (if they are downed pick them up; you have 45 seconds to reach them), finally complete objectives.

Frequently Asked Questions About Story

  1. Why do players seem to drop from a match?
    • Players ‘dropping’ has been an issue since the release of Legends. There are many reasons people drop (ranging from an in-real-life issue to going ‘down’ in-game and being frustrated over something).
  2. How do I fill a slot if someone drops mid-game?
    • Luckily there are TWO solutions to fill a slot if someone drops mid-game. You can either matchmake mid-game OR invite someone who is on your Friends list and plays them game (online/on ghost). To navigate there, hit Options -> R1 to Social, then either select a Friend to send an invite OR choose the ‘matchmake to fill empty slots’
  3. How do I farm a particular gear?
    • As of today, there is no clear way to farm for a particular gear outside of those that are class-specific (Class Charms, Bomb Pack, Longbow, Blowgun). To farm those = play as the class they are tied to.
    • Gear rarity can be farmed to an extent. Check out the Drop Rates section for more details on the drop rates in-game by Game Mode.
  4. What is the best build for story?
    • The ‘best’ build varies a bit based on what is your goal and/or playstyle. There are several types of ‘best’ builds that can be broken down into categories such as Solo, Speedrunning/Leaderboard running, Support, etc. You can find more information on the Builds page.
  5. How do I get better at Story?
    • The easiest answer is ‘practice’. Read through the First Time Player Strategies and work on those. If you are feeling like you need to take the next step, watching some of the most notable players can show you more advanced strategies to practice.
